Mt. Pleasant Regional Airport Unveils Upgrades

After extensive planning and successfully securing grant funding, the Mt. Pleasant Regional Airport’s (KMOP) taxiway and lighting project was completed well below the $2.7 million cost.

This project was fully funded through grants.

  • 90% Federal Grants
  • 5% State Grants
  • 5% Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Local Match Funds

Due to high traffic counts, the airport is now considered a regional airport, which made the airport eligible for $100,000 in additional grant funding.

Hydrant Flushing to Begin

During Fall 2025, all water hydrants north of High Street to the north city limits will be flushed.

Properties within the flushing perimeters may notice an occasional drop in water pressure and slight water discoloration and odor. If so, you are encouraged to remove your faucet aerators and run the water until it is clear. The water is safe to drink.

During this process water may pool over roadways. Please travel with caution and do not drive through standing water. To reduce water over the roadways, and to keep the catch basins clear, residents and landscaping companies are reminded not to rake leaves into the streets until October 27.

The proposed water main flushing schedule for the months of September and October are as follows:

Week of 9/15/2025: Area inside the borders of Broadway Street to Pickard Street and Packard Road to Bradley Street.

Week of 9/22/2025: Intersection of High Street and Adams Street north to Pickard Street.

Week of 9/29/2025: Area inside the borders of Bellows Street to Pickard Street and Oak Street to Main Street.

Week of 10/6/2025: Area inside the borders of High Street to Pickard Street and Kinney Street to Mission Street.

Week of 10/13/2025: Area inside the borders of Pickard Street to River Road and Kinney Street to Brown Street.

Week of 10/20/2025: Areas inside the borders of High Street to Pickard Street and Bradley Street to Harris Street.

Please note, this is a proposed schedule. Timing may be adjusted once the project begins. For up to date schedule information visit the web news section on the city’s website www.mt-pleasant.org, blog www.mpcityblog.com, or the city’s Facebook page.

City Offices Closed on September 30

City offices will be closed on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 for a staff meeting. Regular business hours will resume on October 1.

Tribal Funding Provides New Van for Public Safety Efforts

Thanks to Saginaw Chippewa Tribal 2% funding, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department (MPPD) has been able to replace the 25-year-old Emergency Services Team (EST) and Youth Services Unit (YSU) half-ton van with a 2024 one-ton van. This new van is better suited for transporting officers who could each be carrying up to 50 pounds of equipment and gear.

The quarter of a century-old consumer grade van’s unreliability was a real concern in emergency situations, and when bussing Youth Police Academy cadets to their various learning sites.

EST members from multiple agencies will benefit from this new transport van. This includes the MPPD, CMU PD, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal PD, Isabella County Central Dispatch and Community Mental Health for Central Michigan.

Thank you to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe for their generosity.

Fall Leaf Collection Information

As the leaves start to fall, residents and landscaping companies are reminded to not rake leaves into the streets until the week of October 27. City staff will make one sweep through the entire city during pick up weeks. Therefore, leaves should be raked into low piles before Monday of pick-up weeks and not cover catch basins.

On High and Pickard Streets, where high traffic volume prohibits leaves in the street, residents and landscaping companies should rake the leaves onto the rights-of-way, as close to the curb as possible. Those who live on streets other than High and Pickard must place their leaves in the street. If you live on a boulevard, do not place leaves in the median, place them in front of your home.

Yard waste bags should not be used; this collection is for leaves only. Leaf piles must not contain garden or shrubbery clippings, dead grass, branches, trim board, or other material.

Residents who wish to rake their yards ahead of the city’s collection schedule may bag and dispose of the leaves for a fee at the Material Recovery Facility, located at 4208 E. River Rd., Mt. Pleasant. Leaves may also be mulched with a mulching lawnmower.

The city’s 2025 leaf collection schedule is as follows:

  • Week of November 3: Staff will collect leaves in a city-wide sweep.
  • Week of November 17: Staff will collect leaves in a city-wide sweep.
  • Week of December 1: Final collection of leaves in a city-wide sweep. Any leaves left in the street after the crews have made their final pass will not be collected and are the responsibility of the homeowner.
