In an effort to expedite the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients suffering from musculoskeletal conditions, MyMichigan Health recently expanded its unique WellSport Sports Medicine Program to include new locations in Alpena, Saginaw and West Branch. This is in addition to the existing locations in Alma, Bay City, Clare, Midland and Mt. Pleasant.

“In addition to injury prevention, MyMichigan’s WellSport Program is specifically designed to assess and provide non-surgical treatment to patients suffering from strains, sprains, contusions, fractures, joint pain, overuse-related injuries and arthritis,” said J. T Pinney, M.D., medical director, WellSport. “Our team also offers a variety of innovative, advanced treatments for pain relief, including hydrodissection, hydrodilatation and platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy. And if surgery is required, we can also help expedite the referral to an orthopedic or specialized surgeon.”

The program’s newest physician team members include Angel Bermudez, M.D., in Saginaw; Shelby Crawford, M.D., in Alpena; and Anthony Holst, D.O., in West Branch. These physicians join an experienced team of sports medicine specialists, including J. T Pinney, M.D.; Daniel Diaz, D.O.; Richard Giannotti, Jr., D.O.; AJ Pinney, D.O.; and Michael Rodriguez, M.D.

“All of our physicians have completed advanced fellowship training in primary care sports medicine and specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries and medical conditions,” said Dr. Pinney. We treat patients of all ages and work with athletes of all levels, from competitive athletes to weekend warriors.”

MyMichigan’s WellSport Program is designed to:

  • Prevent injuries through education and training.
  • Help injured athletes get back to the game as safely and quickly as possible utilizing prompt, effective, comprehensive treatment strategies.
  • Manage joint pain and other musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Manage medical conditions that can affect performance such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, weight and arthritis.

“We are also proud to partner with some of our local colleges and universities to provide ongoing care and treatment to their collegiate athletes,” Dr. Pinney added. These included Alma College, Central Michigan University and Northwood University. We also support our athletic trainers who are currently caring for local athletes at 21 high schools across our service area. And lastly, our physicians provide sports medicine coverage at annual international events like the Dow Tennis Classic and the Dow Championship.”
