Smokey Bear’s Birthday, a film festival, and more at the library this month! There’s lots to do at Chippewa River District Library. Here's a look at this month's event calendar. All events are free but registration is required for some events.

An Outdoor Army: The CCC in Michigan

September 12, 6 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library

Michigan's Civilian Conservation Corps camps have disappeared, but the legacy of the corps—the forests, parks, and conservation efforts—remains.  Learn about Michigan's CCC and its lasting impact at this presentation by Northern Lower Peninsula Historian Hillary Pine.

 

Smokey Bear Reading Challenge

September 14 – October 31, All Day, All CRDL Locations

Help celebrate Smokey’s 80th Birthday by participating in the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge! Join Smokey Bear to learn about wildfires and nature. Read books, take action, and have fun! The challenge runs through October 31, 2024. Complete the reading challenge and earn prizes, including your choice of Smokey Bear gear. A grand prize drawing will happen for each library branch.

This program is in partnership with the USDA Forest Service.

 

Kids & Culture: Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday

September 14, 10 a.m., Veterans Memorial Library

Join us as we celebrate Smokey Bear's 80th Birthday! Drop by between 10 a.m. and noon to enjoy the following activities:

 

·         Meet and greet Smokey Bear and wish him a "Happy Birthday!"

·         Enjoy birthday cake

·         Sing-a-long campfire songs with Ms. Christie

·         Learn about campfire safety

·         Sign up for Smokey Bear's Reading Challenge

·         Learn about wildfire safety from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources

·         Touch a firetruck with the City of Mt. Pleasant Fire Department

·         Learn about local nature preserves with the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy

 

This program partners with the USDA Forest Service, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and the City of Mt. Pleasant Fire Department.

Join us in Rosebush as we celebrate Smokey Bear's 80th Birthday! Drop by between 5-6:30 p.m. to enjoy the following activities:

·         Learn about campfire fire safety

·         Sign up for Smokey Bear's Reading Challenge

True Crime Club: We Carry Their Bones

September 1, 6 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library

Join us for an engaging, lighthearted discussion of this fascinating, yet disturbing genre. We focus our discussion around uplifting and empathizing with the victims of these crimes. We will be discussing We Carry Their Bones: The Search for Justice at the Dozier School for Boys by Erin Kimmerleas, as our primary source of information, but feel free to research this topic however you choose!

 

Cook the Kit: Parsnips

September 5, Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market

Embark on your family-friendly edible adventure when you visit Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market this summer and pick up your own free Cook the Kit. Each Cook the Kit includes: A featured farm-fresh recipe, pantry ingredients, and a voucher to purchase your farm-fresh produce ingredients at the farmers' market. Registration Required.

 

Spice It Up: Elderflower

September 11, All CRDL branches

Are you ready to spice up your meals? Laura from GreenTree Co-op Market will share a tasty recipe using Elderflower. This event will be offered as a blog post to view at your leisure. Register to receive a sample of the spice of the month at your branch location. Registration Required.

 

Brown Bag Book Discussion Group

September 18, 12 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library

Join us for our noon time book discussion. This month we will be discussing Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. Feel free to bring your lunch.

 

Stories in Song with Don Masselli

September 20, 1 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library

Don Masselli is back to share more stories in song! Don is a storyteller in the form of "story songs." His musical performance includes singing and talking about story songs, the people who wrote them, and the meaning or message of certain songs. 

 

Manhattan Short Film Festival

September 29, 2 p.m., Celebration Cinema

September 30, 7 p.m., Celebration Cinema

Join us at Celebration Cinema for the 2024 showing of MANHATTAN SHORT! This showing is FREE to the public, but you must register to reserve a spot. Seating is "first come, first served" upon arrival. If registration doesn't fill, walk-ins will be welcome. Check-in will begin 30 minutes before the show; please stop by the Chippewa River District Library table in the Celebration Cinema lobby to receive instructions. The total film run time is approximately 2-1/2 hours; however, there will be a 10-minute intermission. We will offer a short discussion time following the show for those interested. 

 

An optional concession special is available to all attendees. It includes a medium soda and an 85 oz - box of popcorn for $6.50 + tax. Mention the group rate at the concessions counter.

CRDL Teen Library Council: Volunteen Night

September 10, 5 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library

Join us for an opportunity for Teen Library Council volunteers to connect as a group and give back to their community at the same time. Each month we'll feature a different volunteer project to help our community thrive! Best suited for teens in grades 9-12. Registration Required.

 

CRDL Teen Take & Make Kit: DIY Upcycled Carrying Cases

September 19, All Day, Veterans Memorial Library

This month, we're upcycling again to create a uniquely decorated, one-of-a-kind carrying case for back-to-school. When it's completed, you'll have a perfect place to stash things like your earbuds, charging cable, spare change, etc. For grades 6-12. Please allow extra time if you request a branch delivery for your kit. Registration Required.

 

Middle School Reading Masters

A monthly book club for middle school students! This month we will be meeting On Zoom for a lighthearted book discussion. Join us as we read Paradise on Fire by Jewell Parker Rhodes.

Story and Craft Kit: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Isabella Citizens for Health

Mondays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

A Community Health Worker is knowledgeable about area service organizations and resources that help improve difficult situations, provide access to basic needs, and minimize or eliminate barriers to an improved quality of life. CHW’s can assist you in health insurance enrollment, transportation assistance, housing resources, and more.
