Alma Program Gives Cancer Patients Tools to Face Diagnosis, Treatment

Travis Steinka, O.T., a certified mindfulness and meditation teacher at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, will lead the upcoming mindfulness program.
A cancer diagnosis and its treatment can bring an avalanche of emotions for the patient and their family. To help cope, MyMichigan Health is offering a free program in Alma that focuses on the use of mindfulness for current or post-cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers. The program will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma, 300 E. Warwick Drive, Alma, in Room 1162.
The event will be led by Travis Steinka, occupational therapist, MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. Steinka is a certified mindfulness and meditation teacher who will lead the mindfulness program and provide tools to help with anxiety, reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
“Mindfulness is a way to help manage emotions, reduce stress and cope with the physical challenges that comes with a diagnosis and treatment,” said Steinka. “Using mindfulness techniques can create better health outcomes by helping patients focus on the present moment and steering them away from the worry of the unknowns that cancer may bring.
Registration is required and may be done by visiting www.mymichigan.org/mindfulness or calling toll-free (800) 395-1355.
