The new private pre-operative and recovery rooms complete the state-of-the-art surgical services construction project at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma. The new area offers increased comfort and privacy for patients and their families, as well as the most advanced surgical technology.

Constructions on the final phase of the 51,200 square-foot surgical suite renovation and expansion project wrapped up this month at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma. The final phase included renovations to create 18 private pre-operative and recovery rooms, a seven-bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with advanced monitoring systems, and a day surgery area.

“We are excited to bring to a close this construction project, which combines the latest, state-of-the-art surgical technology, as well as increased comfort and privacy for patients and their families,” said Marita Hattem-Schiffman, F.A.C.H.E., C.P.M.S.M., president, MyMichigan Medical Centers in Alma, Clare and Mt. Pleasant. “The most advanced surgical services will continue to be available to all central Michigan communities through this significant investment”

The surgical suites and pre and post-operative areas were made possible through generous donations to the MyMichigan Health Foundation which raised $1.2 million of the $26 million for the project.

“Our donors’ invaluable financial contributions paved the way for this project. They are true partners in our purpose of ‘Creating Healthy Communities - Together,’” said Becky Church, director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. “Their gifts will help patients, families, our community and region for years to come. The commitment they show to the well-being of our community inspires us every day.”

Earlier this year, the Medical Center in Alma opened four new operating rooms that are larger than traditional operating rooms to accommodate the latest innovative technology. The rooms feature ceiling-mounted booms which replaced the traditional floor-based model, offering even greater positioning with ultra-efficient LED lights. Upgraded video monitors provide a view of the operating table and show surgical images, X-rays and patient vital signs. In addition, the rooms are equipped to add remote collaboration, consulting and teaching.

A new Sterile Processing Department was also part of the project and places staff within close proximity to the operating rooms allowing for a more efficient workflow. The primary functions of the Sterile Processing Department are decontamination, assembly and sterile processing, sterile storage, and distribution of items used during surgery.

Then, in May 2024, MyMichigan Medical Center Alma opened the hospital’s new main entrance for better access to outpatient services and testing, and for those who will be having surgery or a procedure. The new entrance is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests and visitors should use the Hospital/Visitor Entrance to visit inpatients or to access the Highlander Boutique, Highland Café or meeting rooms. Any after hour services can be accessed through the Emergency Department.

“The new main entrance is a warm, inviting showcase that provides our patients and guests easier access to outpatient and surgical services,” adds Hattem-Schiffman. “We know this Medical Center is your regional go-to place for health care because we offer high-quality care close to home and provide access to the greatest breadth, depth, diversity and volume of health care in central Michigan.”

A community open house to showcase this beautiful expansion project is planned for Spring 2025.
