SER Grounds Maintenance Worker FT

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, perform all necessary job duties and responsibilities to maintain 150-acre+ grounds of upscale world class resort property.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate all grounds maintenance equipment including power mowers, tractors, edgers, hedge trimmers, snow blowers, skid-steer, trucks, gators, backhoe and all other grounds equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs of all above equipment including filter replacement, oil changes, spark plugs, welding and belt replacement.
  • Apply proper chemicals for fertilization, weed and pest eradicating to lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Maintain and perform repairs and expansions on Toro irrigation system including line repairs, head replacement and weekly testing of spray patterns.
  • Perform the policing of the grounds on trash removal of all outside trash receptacles, parking areas and entrances twice per shift.
  • Complete biohazard cleanup for all SECR areas outside of the building entrances, parking lots and parking ramps.
  • Maintain flower beds including planting of annuals and tulip display, upkeep of perennial beds, deadheading, mulching and weed removal.
  • Practice proper pruning techniques for individual plant species, maintains all shrubs and trees in a manicured condition.
  • Perform snow and ice removal of walkways, emergency exits, building entrances and 3rd level parking ramp to ensure guest and associate safety.
  • Provide guest and associate assistance when needed including battery jump starts.
  • Remain available for a three-shift work schedule during winter operations.
  • Practice SECR Hospitality Rules with every internal and external guest.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Contact with Housekeeping and Security to resolve issues on the grounds and provide assistance to guests.
  • Contact with other Facility department divisions to coordinate grounds work and outdoor events. Assists Tribal Operation entities when requested for snow removal operations and irrigation system repairs and maintenance.
  • Contact with guests and SECR associates while conducting job duties and assisting them with vehicle jump starts. The purposes of contacts is to plan, organize and coordinate work activities to establish the world class first impression on customers for their Soaring Eagle experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of use of maintenance tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in preventive maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
  • Knowledgeable in using hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, mowers, tractors, snow blower, chain-saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, or pruning saws.
  • Skill in safely operating tractor, power tools, or ATV vehicles.
  • Skill in the use of cleaning tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.


Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with repair equipment.
  • Strenuous physical exertion in climbing ladders and lifting heavy objects.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and reach with arms and hands.
  • Occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Indoors and outside.
  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials
  • Exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials and moving parts may occur.
  • Situations where safety equipment is needed may occur.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Evening, overnight, holiday and/or weekend work may be required.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Frequent walking and standing in a smoking environment and contact with the general public. Constant visual stimulation via neon lights on slot machines, repeatedly changing machine video screens, static or flashing signs throughout the casino and constant machine and crowd noise.
  • One year experience in grounds maintenance performing resort level job duties in either lawn care or landscaping similar to those listed in the essential duties section.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.


License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver`s License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver`s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
