Ten years after a stroke damaged his speech center and the right side of his body, 60-year-old Matt Vusich continues his journey of recovery. He and his wife, Deb, prioritize health and well-being, not only for themselves and their plumbing and heating business, but also for their kids and grandkids.

Matt received extensive care for his stroke in 2015 from stroke specialists and specialized rehabilitation staff at the RehabCentre at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma. Having lost speech, balance and the use of his entire right side, it proved to be a long road to reach the level of recovery he has today. He’s determined to stay positive and as active as possible.

“Matt has always been a glass-half-full guy,” Deb shared. “We certainly wish the stroke hadn’t happened and understand that challenges are ongoing, but we have a huge tribe of friends and family that pray for us, and Matt stays engaged in all things. Our time at the RehabCentre was great. “We were very, very pleased with the treatment. The occupational therapy in particular was wonderful. The staff helped me, too. They gave me advice that allowed me to take a deep breath and remind myself that I could handle this because God never gives us more than we can handle.”

Some of Matt’s ongoing drive and motivation came from Physical Therapist Tom Jones, P.T.A., and Occupational Therapist Kara Baker, O.T.R., when they spent time helping him regain his strength and skills. “They were phenomenal,” said Matt. “They kept it real with me. They were sympathetic but didn’t coddle. That’s what was needed at the time, and I carry that approach with me now. You have to keep moving – working, carrying things, trying – every day.”

Matt and Deb recently participated in Arts United at Alma College, an annual event at which dance teams show off their moves to raise funds for United Way. Team Vusich had Matt and Deb at center stage, an experience they wouldn’t have thought possible 10 years ago. They continue working together at their business and stay busy with their twins and four grandchildren.

“When I’m trying to do something and experience frustration, I stay calm and find a way to come at it from a different angle.” Matt shared. “It’s important to keep an open mind in that regard. It also helps to maintain a sense of humor and stay positive, which we do together. We have a great life.”

Matt continues his journey of recovery, receives acupuncture bi-weekly and regularly reflects on all of those who have been instrumental in helping him along the way. “What I remember most about my time at the RehabCentre are the kind, loving hands,” Matt said. “They showed me that they really cared. They stuck with me, treated me well and did a great job. I’m so thankful at the progress I continue to make and all of the blessings I’ve received along the way.”
