Position:  Quality Inspector
Location:  Midland, MI

Primary Function:  Steel inspection and preparation of quality documents.  Assist with ironworking and shop duties if quality control is slow.

  • Prepare and submit quality plans to customers
  • Perform inspections on fabricated steel, welds, and steel erections at job sites and in fabrication shop, and write quality control reports
  • Review and manage material test reports to ensure material grade is per specification
  • File as-built drawings
  • Review shop drawings to design drawing to be sure they match before submitting to the customer or engineer
  • Review specifications for details of material to match design/drawings
  • May perform field sketches from field verifications
  • Manage, complete and submit grating inspections with customers
  • Backup weld instructor for steel welding classes
  • Audit steel shop fire extinguishers for compliance
  • Inspect rigging equipment
  • Audit tools and equipment
  • Preventative maintenance on steel shop machinery
  • Make deliveries to field sites
  • Pickup miscellaneous materials from vendors
  • Fabricate and weld in steel shop
  • Inventory materials
  • Regular in-person attendance required; may work remotely if governmentally mandates
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned by immediate supervisor
Education and/or Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years quality inspection experience, 5+ preferred.
  • CWI/CASI preferred
  • 3 years structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication and erection
  • AWS D1.1, ASW D1.2, AWS D1.3 and AWS D1.6 knowledge preferred
  • AISC and RCSC knowledge preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with writing welding procedures a plus

Journeyman Ironworker

Language Skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Read, analyze and interpret blueprints and construction documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percentage. 
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas and graphs).  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Physical Demands: 
The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: 

The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. 
Must use safety equipment (PPE) where warranted.  The noise level in the office is quiet and at job sites it is usually loud.
