Lecture by Dr. Gene Ragland
Gene Ragland, a CMU alumnus known for calling attention to housing discrimination in Mount Pleasant in 1965, will be visiting campus for a presentation from 4-5pm on October 24th in Powers 136. Ragland, a white student, and Cecil Rice, a black student athlete, were both enlisted by a CM Life newspaper editor to apply for CMU “approved” off-campus housing. Rice was denied by ten of the fifteen landlords, whereas Ragland was approved for rental by all those queried. The results of this survey were printed on CM Life’s front page, calling for change and an end to discrimination in the community. Reception to follow from 5-6pm.
This event is free and open to CMU students, staff, faculty, and the Mount Pleasant community.
